Simple Search

The simple search bar searches one field at a time: pick a field, pick an operator, type a
value, press Search. It appears on Listings,
Listing Templates and Sales, and works the same
way on all three — only the list of fields differs.

Press the magnifier — Simple Search — on the toolbar. To keep the bar on screen
permanently, turn on Always show Simple Search in
Main Views; with that on, the toolbar no longer draws the
magnifier and the bar loses its Cancel button, because there is nothing left to hide.

The controls

Control What it does
Select search field Which field to search. The list is the searchable fields for this grid.
Select operator How to compare. Which operators are offered depends on the field — see below.
Value to Search What to look for. For a date field this becomes a date picker and the label reads
Date in yyyy-mm-dd.
Enter starting value / Enter ending value Shown instead of the single value when the operator is Between. Both ends are included.
Select value Shown instead of a free-text box for fields with a known set of values, so you choose rather than
type. The values are fetched from your own data the first time you pick the field.
Options Three switches, described below. You can choose more than one.
Search (magnifier) Runs it. Enter in the value box does the same.
Cancel Hides the bar and clears the search. Not drawn when the bar is set to always show.

The operators

The bar offers only the operators that make sense for the field you picked.

Kind of field Operators offered
Text Equal to, Starting with, Ending with, Contains, Is null, Is not null, All words in any order, Any
word in any order.
Numbers, amounts, dates, percentages, quantities Equal to, Not equal to, Between, Greater than, Greater than or equal to, Less than, Less than or
equal to, Is null, Is not null.
Yes/no Equal to, Not equal to.
Fields with a fixed set of values Equal to, Not equal to, Is null, Is not null — chosen from the Select value list.
Fields that can only be matched exactly Equal to, Is null, Is not null.
“All words in any order” is the one to reach for on titles. Contains wants your
words together and in that order; All words in any order finds a title holding every word you typed
wherever they fall. Any word in any order is the loosest of the three.

The options

Option What it does
Within Grid Searches only the rows already on screen, rather than everything. Use it to narrow a result you
already have.
Case Sensitive Makes the match care about capitals. Off by default.
Site / account Restricts the search to the eBay account and site currently selected — see
Select Account and Site.

Dates

Dates are entered as yyyy-mm-dd, and the field becomes a date picker so you need not type at
all. With Between, both the starting and ending dates are included.

FAQ

Q: The operator I want is not in the list.
A: The list is built from the field you picked. Contains is offered on text
but not on a number; Between on a number or date but not on text.
Q: The value box turned into a dropdown.
A: That field has a known set of values, taken from your own data, so you choose one
rather than risk a typo.
Q: My search found nothing and I am sure the item exists.
A: Check whether Within Grid is ticked — it only searches what is
already on screen. Then try Contains or All words in any order instead of
Equal to, which needs the whole field to match exactly.
Q: Where has the Cancel button gone?
A: You have Always show Simple Search on, so there is nothing to cancel back
to. Clear the value and search again to get all your rows back.
Q: How do I search on more than one field at once?
A: Use Advanced Search from the toolbar, which builds a search from
several conditions.
Q: What do Is null and Is not null mean?
A: Empty and not empty. They are how you find, say, every listing with no SKU.
