Refresh Categories

← All WonderLister user guides

Brings down eBay’s category tree and the features each category allows. It is the largest of the refreshes, and the one most worth running when a category looks wrong.

Desktop application only. This section is drawn only in the WonderLister desktop
application. A customer using the online application will not find it in
eBay Sync at all — which is also why there is no screenshot: the pictures in
these guides are captured from the online application.

Where to find it

Open eBay Sync from the application bar and choose
Refresh Categories in the list on the left. Press Start Refresh.

Why you would run it

  • A category you know exists on eBay is not in the picker in
    eBay Categories.
  • eBay has announced category changes — it revises the tree periodically.
  • A listing is refused for a category that no longer exists.
The category decides a great deal. Which item specifics exist and which eBay insists on,
which product identifiers are required, and what the fees are all follow from the leaf category — so a stale
tree shows up as puzzling refusals rather than as an obviously wrong category.

How a refresh runs

Pressing Start Refresh queues the work and hands you back the application — it does not sit
and wait. The button is disabled while the request is being sent, then the work goes on in the background.

  • Watch it in Activity Logs.
  • You are e-mailed when it finishes, unless you have turned those e-mails off in
    Preferences.
  • Running it twice does no harm, but it does no good either while the first run is still
    going.

FAQ

Q: Nothing seemed to happen.
A: The work is queued and runs in the background. Watch it in
Activity Logs.
Q: How often should I run this?
A: When something is missing or out of date, rather than on a schedule. There is no
harm in running it, but there is no benefit in running it for its own sake.
Q: I cannot find this section.
A: It is in the desktop application only. In the online application this reference
data is maintained centrally.
