Customize Editor

The listing editor shows every field the product knows about, and most sellers do not use most of them.
Customize Editor hides the ones you never touch, so the editor is the shape of your
business rather than of eBay’s whole feature set.

No screenshot. The dialog is opened from inside the listing editor, which the capture run
photographs section by section rather than by opening its dialogs. Every switch is listed below.

Where to find it

Open a listing in the editor and choose Customize Editor from its toolbar.

This is a permission. An account that is not an administrator, and does not have the right
to change these settings, is told You are not permitted to view this page. and sees nothing else.

What can be hidden

Each switch hides one field or section from the editor. Turning a switch on hides it; it does not delete anything.

Switch Hides
Hide Sub Title The subtitle field, which eBay charges for.
Hide SKU Your own stock number.
Hide Pictures The pictures section.
Hide Condition Description The free-text description of the item’s condition.
Hide LotSize How many items make up one lot.
Hide Average Unit Cost What the item cost you.
Hide Theme The listing theme.
Hide Visitor Counter The visitor counter option.
Hide Notes Your private notes box.
Hide Custom Fields The custom fields section.
Hide Storage Location Bin The bin within the storage location.
Hide Description Template The description template picker.
Hide Dimensions Length, width and height.
Hide Weight The weight fields.
Hide Product Ids (UPC/EAN/ISBN/Brand-MPN) The unique identifiers.
Hide Consignor The consignor and its terms.
Hide Secondondary Category The optional second eBay category. (The label carries a typo in the product.)
Hide Best Offer The best-offer switch and its two prices.
Hide Variations The variations section.
Hide Compatibilities The vehicle compatibility section.
Hide VAT % The VAT percentage.
Disable Simple Editor Not a hide at all: it stops the simple editor being offered, so every listing opens in the full editor.

The three limits

Field What it does
Max characters for Title Stops you typing a longer title than this.
Max characters for Sub Title The same for the subtitle.
Max characters for SKU The same for the SKU.
These limits are yours, not eBay’s. eBay has its own maximums and will refuse a listing
that breaks them whatever you set here. Use these to keep under eBay’s limit — a title cap of
75 for a marketplace that allows 80, so nothing is ever truncated on the item page.

Saving

The save icon at the top right and the Save button at the foot do the same thing. The
settings are yours and apply to every listing you open.

How to simplify the editor

  1. Open a listing and choose Customize Editor.
  2. Turn on the switch for each field you never use.
  3. Set the three character limits, or leave them at zero for no limit of your own.
  4. Click Save, then reopen a listing to see the shorter editor.

FAQ

Q: Does hiding a field clear its value?
A: No. The value stays on the listing and is still sent to eBay; you simply stop
seeing the field.
Q: A field I need has vanished.
A: Its switch is on here. Turn it off and save.
Q: I was told I am not permitted.
A: These settings belong to the account. An administrator can change them —
see Staff Accounts.
Q: Are these the same as Preferences?
A: They are the editor’s own share of them. The rest are on
Preferences.
Q: Does this affect other staff?
A: The settings are held against the account, so yes.
