Bulk assign pictures

← All WonderLister user guides

One setting, for one job: dropping a batch of photographs onto a batch of items and having WonderLister deal
them out. It says how many pictures each item should get.

Where to find it

The last section of the Customize Views dialog, and the
Bulk assign pictures section of Preferences. They are the
same setting.

The Bulk assign pictures setting

A single number: how many pictures go to each item.

The setting

Setting What it does
Number of pictures to assign to each listing How many of the dropped pictures each listing or listing template receives before the next item is
dealt from the batch.
The order is decided before anything is assigned, and by two different rules. The pictures
being dropped are sorted by file name, alphabetically. The items must be sorted by Listing
Id
. Get either wrong and the pictures still land — on the wrong items.

How to use it

  1. Name the files so that sorting them alphabetically gives the order you want. Zero-pad
    the numbers — item001_1.jpg, item001_2.jpg, item002_1.jpg — because
    10 sorts before 2 otherwise.
  2. Set the number to how many pictures each item should get.
  3. Sort the grid by Listing Id, and select the items.
  4. Drag the pictures onto the selection. The first n go to the first item, the
next n to the second, and so on.

Worked example

Three listings, six pictures, the number set to 2. Sorted by name, the pictures are
a1.jpg, a2.jpg, b1.jpg, b2.jpg, c1.jpg,
c2.jpg. Sorted by Listing Id, the listings are #1, #2, #3.

Listing Gets
#1 a1.jpg, a2.jpg
#2 b1.jpg, b2.jpg
#3 c1.jpg, c2.jpg

FAQ

Q: The pictures went to the wrong listings.
A: Almost always the sort. The grid must be sorted by Listing Id, and
the file names must sort alphabetically into the order you intend. Check both before dropping.
Q: My files are numbered 1 to 12 and the order came out wrong.
A: Alphabetical sorting puts 10, 11, 12 before
2. Rename them with leading zeros — 01, 02, … 12.
Q: Can different listings have different numbers of pictures?
A: Not in one bulk drop — the number is the same for every item. Do the batches
separately, or assign the extras by hand afterwards in the editor’s
Pictures section.
Q: I have more pictures than the items need, or fewer.
A: The batch is dealt out in order until one side runs out. Count them first —
items × the number should equal the pictures you are dropping.
Q: Does this replace the pictures a listing already has?
A: Check the result on one item before doing a large batch. Individual pictures are
always managed in the editor’s Pictures section and through
Manage Pictures.
