Campaign Automation Rule Editor

← All WonderLister user guides

A campaign automation rule moves a Promoted Listings campaign’s cost-per-click through the
week: a bid for every hour of every day. Bid more when your buyers are awake, less when they are not, without
sitting at the screen to do it.

No screenshot. The editor is opened from the campaign automation rules list, which is itself
raised as a dialog from the Campaigns page and from the settings page — the capture run photographs
routed pages and the dialogs a page toolbar opens, not a dialog inside a dialog. Every control is named
below.

Where to find it

  1. Open the Campaigns page.
  2. Click Manage automation rules on any eligible campaign’s row.
  3. Click Add, or select a rule and click Edit.

The rules list shows Rule Id, Rule Name and Is Enabled?,
with Add, Edit, Delete and Help above it.
The same list is a section of the settings page.

The rule’s own settings

Field What it is
Rule Name What the rule is called. Required, and it is what the dropdown on a campaign row shows.
Is Enabled? Whether the rule runs. Clear it to park a rule without deleting it.
Use Time Zone The time zone the hours are read in. This is the whole point of the field: your nine o’clock is not your buyers’ nine o’clock.
Default Max CPC amount A figure to fill the week with.
Update Writes that figure into every hour of every day. The quick way to start: set a baseline, then adjust the hours that differ.

The seven days

Below the settings are seven expanding panels, Rule for: Sunday through Rule for:
Saturday
. Open one and it shows a row per hour — At hour reading
00:00 to 23:00, and Set Cpc amount to beside it. Twenty-four
figures per day, a hundred and sixty-eight in the rule.

Control What it does
Borrow from Previous day Copies the previous day’s twenty-four figures into this one. It appears on every day but Sunday, which has no previous day in the list.
Save Checks the rule and closes.
Cancel Closes without keeping the changes.
Every hour must be between 0.02 and 100. Those are eBay’s limits, not ours. A figure outside
them is refused by name — MaxCpc value for day: Tuesday, hour: 14 is invalid — so you
are told which one to fix rather than being left to hunt through a hundred and sixty-eight boxes.

How to build a rule

  1. Click Add in the rules list.
  2. Type a Rule Name that says what the rule is for.
  3. Choose the Use Time Zone your buyers are in.
  4. Type a baseline into Default Max CPC amount and click Update. Every hour of the week now holds it.
  5. Open Rule for: Monday and change the hours that should differ.
  6. Open Tuesday, click Borrow from Previous day, and adjust from there. Repeat for the rest of the week.
  7. Leave Is Enabled? ticked and click Save.
  8. On the Campaigns page, choose the rule in the campaign’s Automation Rule dropdown and press that row’s save icon.

FAQ

Q: Save is refused and names a day and an hour.
A: That hour’s figure is outside eBay’s range of 0.02 to 100. Open that day’s panel
and correct it.
Q: Do I have to fill in a hundred and sixty-eight boxes?
A: No. Update fills the whole week with one figure, and
Borrow from Previous day copies a day you have already done.
Q: Which time zone should I choose?
A: The one your buyers are in, not necessarily your own. A rule for a US
marketplace run from Europe should be in the buyers’ zone.
Q: The rule is saved but nothing is happening.
A: A rule does nothing until it is attached to a campaign. Do that on the Campaigns
page, and check Next Execution Time on the row.
Q: How do I see what it did?
A: Show Rule Execution History on the campaign’s row.
